The hidden reason leaders hold themselves back? At some point, we start “playing the role” we believe others expect from us, instead of showing up as who we really are. The result is a disconnect...and a struggle for many leaders.

That critical voice in your head?
The one that tells you you’re not quite ready, not quite good enough, not quite “there” yet…
It’s more common than we think, and often louder the more responsibility we take on.

Leaders struggle-not because they lack capability- but because of how they see their role.
Working with so many talented leaders over the years, I’ve recently been reflecting on how many leaders struggle, and why.
Many leaders struggle not because they lack capability, but because they:
- Constantly compare themselves to more others
- Adapt to others’ expectations rather than act authentically
- Become their own biggest blocker through self-criticism
At some point, we start “playing the role” we believe others expect from us, instead of showing up as who we really are.
The result?
A disconnect between our personal and professional selves.

Confidence Follows Action — Not the Other Way Around
Building your profile or personal brand isn’t just about visibility, it starts with your foundation:
- How you speak to yourself
- How aligned you feel with who you are
- How willing you are to take action, even before you feel fully ready
Because the truth is, confidence doesn’t come first, action does.
So a question to reflect on:
What might change if you stopped trying to meet expectations, and started showing up as yourself?
If you like to skip to the bottom...this post is about self-awareness & development for leaders, including the following points:
- Self-doubt gets louder the more responsibility you take on — it's not a sign you're unqualified
- Leaders often block themselves by comparing, people-pleasing, and over-criticizing themselves
- Many leaders drift into performing a role rather than leading authentically
- A genuine personal brand is built on inner alignment first — not just visibility
- Confidence is a result of taking action, not a prerequisite for it
ASK: What might change if I stopped trying to meet expectations, and started showing up as myself?
